Sophie Cozier, 98

What do you like about your age? “That I get to make it from day to day. Every day I wake up is a day I am very grateful for. I also get to look back on a lifetime full of memories of family and friends. Everyday, I get to see my children and grandkids grow and learn, and best of all, I can go see them as much as I want.”

Have you ever been judged or treated differently because of your age? “Some people have different ideas about age. If they hear you are that old, they may say ‘oh , she is nothing but beyond her capabilities.’ They just automatically shut you off. My opinion and ideas are sometimes immediately invalid and rejected because of my age.”

How were you effected by the pandemic? “I learned to let things happen and cooperate with the rules. You have to realize you are not better or more deserving than anyone else. Everyone was having a hard time, and you have to abide by the rules around you. Once I was able to accept what was going on in the world around me, I learned to adapt. I was devastated that I could not see my family in person for many, many months; however, I learned to use FaceTime to see them virtually. When the whole world shut down, being able to accept and adapt became very important value of mine.”

What is the best thing that has happened in your life? “Marriage. It changes your life from one to two. You have to learn how to act and how to get along. You find your partner life.”

What is the worst thing that has happened in your life? “My life is not over. I just hope I do not break my hip again. I have no more hips to break!”

What is something most people do not know about you? “I used to be a lawyer for the Department of Justice. When people see me, they often do not think I have not accomplished much nor know anything because of my age. However, when I was younger I worked very closely with the enforcement of federal law and the administration of justice in the United States. I worked with very important people and did a job that is still extremely important today.”

Do you wish you were younger or older? “I do not wish for anything. I just take everything day by day.”
