(1/2) “My mother was cleaning her mother’s house one day and she went outside on the balcony to shake the dust rag and here comes my father on a horse and he spotted her and he fell in love with her. And he went to her house to ask for her hand in marriage. Her mother said, ‘she’s the baby. She’s too young to get married.’ She was 13 years old. My grandmother said to him, ‘she’s too young to get married, but I’ve got two other daughters that you could choose from.’ And he looked at them and then to my mother and he said, ‘I’ll wait for Josie.’ She was 14 when she got married and I think my father was about 21 or 22 when he got out of the service [in Italy, before he married her].”
